Los Angeles vs. Oakland: Pitching Matchup
Tyler Anderson will make his Angels debut on Sunday against the Athletics. He spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, putting up career numbers in nearly every metric. He finished 2020 with a 15-5 record, a 2.57 ERA, and 138 strikeouts in 178.2 innings. His previous best in ERA was 3.57 during his rookie season with the Colorado Rockies in 2016. In addition, he more than doubled his previous best win double of seven. Anderson cashed in on his incredible season with a three-year, $39 million contract with the Angels this offseason.
The 33-year-old lefty has posted a 3.58 ERA when pitching in his home ballpark, compared to a 4.80 ERA on the road. He will take the Oakland Coliseum mound for the third time in his career, but he is 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in 12.2 innings against the AL West club. However, he is 6-5 with a 4.63 ERA in 22 games against the American League. He is also 6-7 with a 5.66 ERA during the season’s first month.
Ken Waldichuk will oppose Anderson in the rubber match on Sunday. The 25-year-old debuted in the show last season, going 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA in 34.2 innings. The former top prospect finished with an 8.6 K/9, a far cry from his 13.4 minor league strikeout rate.
He faced the Los Angeles Angels just once last season, hurling seven scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He was a respectable 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA when toeing the rubber at the Oakland Coliseum. However, the most intriguing stat about Waldichuk is his 0.692 WHIP while pitching at home.
Angels vs. Athletics Prediction
The play here has to be the under. Waldichuk posted the best start of his career last year against the Angels, and he has been tough against hitters at Oakland Coliseum. Tyler Anderson was incredible last season and has been downright dominant against the Athletics.
