The Colorado Rockies (2-1) and the San Diego Padres (1-2) will square off in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday afternoon. Colorado took the first two games before San Diego won their first game of the season last night, 8-4. The Padres jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back as Michael Wacha tossed six innings of the four-run ball as he took home the win in his team debut.

Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres Pitching Matchup
Austin Gomber will take the ball for the Colorado Rockies in the last game of the four-game set. The former 4th round pick tossed a career-high 124.2 innings for the Rockies last season, going 5-7 with a 5.56 ERA. He had an H/9 of 9.9 while striking out nearly seven batters per nine frames. Gomber made his rookie debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 but got dealt to the Rockies in the Nolan Arenado deal.
Gomber has pitched well against his team’s division foe, going 2-1 with a 2.01 ERA in 31.1 innings. However, the dominance has all come at home, with him owning a 4.66 ERA at Petco Park in San Diego. The struggles check out given Gomber’s massive differences in his home and road splits. He holds a 3.93 ERA at his home ballpark but a 5.33 ERA when toeing the slab on the road. Gomber has also struggled in the season’s first month, going 2-5 with a 5.32 ERA.
Opposite Austin Gomber will be first-year San Diego Padre Seth Lugo. After spending his first seven seasons with the New York Mets, the 33-year-old signed a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the NL West club this offseason. He has worked mainly as a reliever, making his last start in 2020. However, he posted a 3.60 ERA last year in 62 games for the Mets.
Lugo has tossed 23.2 innings against the Rockies, posting a 2-0 record with a 3.04 ERA. However, he has been mediocre at Petco Park in San Diego with a 2-0 record and a 4.38 ERA. Although Sunday will be his first outing as a Padre, he is 19-7 with a 2.20 ERA when pitching at his home ballpark. Unfortunately for San Deigo backers, Lugo has been below average as a starter over a reliever and has equally struggled in the first season of the month.
Rockies vs. Padres Prediction
The Padres had a rough start to the 2023 season but picked up a big win against their division foe on Saturday. Colorado will deploy a pitcher that has had a rough time getting outs in San Diego and is equally as bad in the season’s first month. San Diego will turn to Seth Lugo, and although he has struggled as a starter throughout his career, he will look to build upon a solid 2022. I’ll take the Padres on the run line.
