The Los Angeles Dodgers (4-2) will head to Phoenix on Thursday night to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks (3-3). The Dodgers swept the Colorado Rockies in a short two-game series to start the week. The Diamondbacks split their two-game series against the San Diego Padres. These two NL West clubs opened the season by playing a four-game set in LA, with the team squads splitting despite the Dodgers outscoring the Dbacks 20-7.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks: Pitching Matchup
Dustin May will make his second start for the Dodgers on Thursday. He faced the DBacks earlier this year, going seven shutout innings but didn’t factor in the decision. The former top prospect has missed a ton of time during his career but enters 2023 fully healthy. He is a career 8-8 with a 3.11 ERA and 8.6 K/9 in 150.2 innings.
Outside of his last start, May has had a rough time silencing the Diamondbacks’ bats. He is 0-1 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.541 WHIP in 12.1 innings against the NL West squad. A lot of the misfortune has come at Chase Field in Phoenix, where the big righty has surrendered three runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. However, May’s home and road pitching splits hardly vary, and he has also been fantastic during the season’s first month.
Merrill Kelly will again oppose Dustin May as he did in his first start. Then, Kelly threw 3.2 shutout innings but surrendered three hits and walked four. The former KBO star enjoyed his best season as a pro last year, going 13-8 with a 3.37 ERA in 200.1 innings. He parlayed his success by joining Team USA in the WBC this spring.
It’s been tough sledding for Kelly against the Dodgers for his career. He is 0-9 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.627 WHIP. However, Kelly has been much more stable at home, pitching to a 3.35 ERA in 295.2 innings. The Arizona native is 6-5 with a 3.65 ERA in the season’s first month.
Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks: Betting Prediction
If last week’s start against the Diamondbacks is genuinely an outlier, then May should have a rough time getting outs on Thursday. Kelly has also never beaten the Dodgers in 13 starts and struggled with baserunners last time out. So let’s grab the over and expect fireworks in this late-night divisional clash.
