Key Stats
The Diamondbacks’ Ryne Nelson toes the slab tonight, holding a 7-8 record and a 5.53 ERA. The righty has had a rough year, and he comes in having allowed six runs in three of his past four starts. The Cubs’ offense hasn’t been great this week, but they have been solid overall, and there are capable hitters up and down the order. Nelson has been awful in three of his last four starts, but the other start he actually pitched well versus the Cubs. He only allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings, and he earned the win. We’ll see if he can string together a similar performance tonight, as his team goes for the sweep.
Chicago’s Jordan Wicks gets the call tonight, and so far he’s 3-0, with a 1.99 ERA in four outings. Wicks has been great since he’s been called up, and the Cubs are yet to lose any of his starts. It’s a small sample size, but Wicks has controlled the zone very well, only walking five total hitters and sporting a 1.06 WHIP. Arizona has been cold at the plate this week, but they’ve picked it up this series, so we’ll see if they can figure out Wicks tonight.
Chicago Cubs vs Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Prediction
The NL Wild Card race is extremely tight, with the Cubs holding the second spot and the D-Backs tied for the third spot with the Reds, who are both just half a game behind Chicago. Miami and San Francisco are also right there, so every game from now until the end of the season has added importance. Nelson has really struggled overall, but he just pitched well against the Cubs. Wicks has been excellent, and even if he ends up regressing, he should be on top of his game tonight. Take the under here as both starters should go deep and go toe-to-toe.
