The NL Central is a two-team race as the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals are all under .500 this year. There is no reason to pretend they are going to come back, so let’s talk about the other two teams. All odds are provided by DraftKings Sportsbook.
Milwaukee Brewers (-170)
The Milwaukee Brewers are the mainstay of the NL Central. They are tied for the lead with a 50-42 record right now. It has felt like they have never really got things going, either. Outside of Christian Yelich, no one has really done too well for the team statistically. This offense has been one of the worst in baseball, and the rotation of Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, and Adrian Houser has not been as effective this season.
One thing the Brew Crew has done this year, though, is beat their divisional opponents, as they are 18-9 thus far against the NL Central. They need to figure out how to win against southpaw pitching, though, as they struggle there, and a lot of rotations have a strong southpaw presence. Unless they are going to make a move, they should not be trusted here.
Cincinnati Reds (+210)
The Cincinnati Reds have been an incredible story and currently hold the tiebreaker in the division. This team has gotten electrified by the young influx of talent, such as Elly De La Cruz being the headliner. The team is 22-8 since he has been called up and went from floundering to playoff hopeful.
They are in the rumors to potentially add another starting pitcher. With players like Lucas Giolito, Shane Bieber, and Shohei Ohtani potentially available, they can really bolster their rotation at the Trade Deadline. If this Cincinnati team can get some pitching additions, they could be contenders. They are top five in runs scored and third in on-base percentage in the majors.
