San Diego Padres escaped with a 5-4 victory over Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday. The Diamondbacks had Ryne Nelson on the mound for 5.0 innings. Nelson gave up six hits and allowed three runs, walking three and striking out three. Ryan Weathers was the starting pitcher for the Padres. He pitched 5.0 innings allowing five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out two.
The two teams now meet on Tuesday at Petco Park. Will the Diamondbacks even the series, or will San Diego go up 2-0?

The Diamondbacks are 2-3 on the year after losing by one yesterday. Corbin Carroll went 3 for 4 scoring two runs and driving in another one. Zac Gallen is today’s projected starter for Arizona. Gallen is 0-1 on the year with a 9.64 ERA. He is struggling to start the season and now faces a Padres team that knows how to hit the ball. Gallen is a good pitcher and can bounce back, though. He opened the season against a stacked Los Angeles Dodgers team and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and allowing five runs. Gallen also walked three and struck out seven in the game.
For the Padres, they are 3-2 to start the season. Eight batters got a hit while Juan Soto drove in two runs for San Diego. Yu Darvish is the probable starter for today’s game. Last year, Yu Darvish was 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA, pitching 194.2 innings and striking out 197 batters. Darvish had a solid season last year and will look to find the same success this year.
This Padres team is absolutely stacked as they have a plethora of players that can hit, and Darvish can shut down opposing batters. This is just a bad matchup for Arizona, and for them to win, they need many things to fall into place. Gallen needs to get it going on the mound and find a way to limit the damage the Padres can cause. They need to find a way to get runs against Darvish, who is tough on the mound and sustain any lead they can get. It is a lopsided matchup, and I am rolling with the Padres on the spread. I don’t see how Arizona wins unless San Diego puts up a dud.
